Unboxing the 2019 Nike Gilbert Baker BE TRUE Collection
With Pride Month set to kick off this weekend, June 1st, it’s only fitting that Nike don the colorful tones of the LGBTQ flags. Atop many of their classics — namely the Air Max 90, Tailwind, Pegasus 35 Turbo, Air Max 720, and Benassi slides — are various twists on the rainbow themes as well as a deep breadth of inspirations.
To celebrate Baker’s impact and memorialize his legacy, Nike partnered with the Gilbert Baker Estate, working hand-in-hand to create this year’s 2019 BETRUE collection. For the first time, the footwear, apparel and accessories all feature the icon’s original eight-color flag, as well as other meaningful “Gilbert-y” touches and symbols of Pride.
Kirkus Review
“A moving, educative memoir from one of the innovators of the gay liberation movement.” Kirkus Review is a rave!

Gilbert Baker
World-famous political activist, designer and flag-maker Gilbert Baker (1951-2017) created the Rainbow Flag in 1978. Over the next four decades, his creation would become embraced across the world as the universal symbol of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) movement. Gilbert’s work as a vexillographer (flag maker) spanned nearly four decades and includes distinctions for creating two flags that attained world’s records for their length.
