EMOJIS OF PRIDE

Since Gilbert Baker created the Pride Flag in 1978, it has become a symbol of liberation for the LGBTQ+ community, inspiring identities across the spectrum to design their own flags. Today, there are only 2 in the emoji keyboard. We petitioned Unicode Consortium to add more flags to the emoji keyboard and created an app for users to share stickers of their own pride flag. For awareness and to educate people on each identity, we created a Change.org petition and promoted it via social media.

It highlights the bravery of everyone who shared their story, especially people from countries where their everyday existence is threatened. The stories we share are hopeful, sometimes harrowing, but always fascinating and a testament to the enduring strength of the Rainbow Flag and the community it serves.

    SAVE THE RAINBOW FLAG

Since 2022, more than 40 communities and school boards across the country have bowed to right-wing pressure, passing regulations to ban the Rainbow Flag, the global symbol of LGBTQ+ equality. These bans are part of a wave of attacks on the LGBTQ+ community including anti-trans laws, book bans, and curriculum changes. The Gilbert Baker Foundation partnered with the ACLU to help community activists fight local flag bans with an aggressive national initiative called ‘Save The Rainbow Flag’.

LANDMARKING THE RAINBOW FLAG AT HARVEY MILK PLAZA

In 1978, Gilbert Baker created the Rainbow Flag in San Francisco. It has since become a globally recognized symbol of LGBTQ+ liberation and pride. The Rainbow Flag installation at Harvey Milk Plaza is Baker’s sole remaining permanent art installation. It honors the political achievements of Harvey Milk and the next generation of LGBTQ+ politicians. While communities across the country are banning the rainbow flag we’re working to landmark this singular physical manifestation of pride.
